A pod of whales frolicking in the waters off the coast of Hermanus
Beautiful coastlines, exceptional restaurants, art galleries, wine estates and a relaxed village atmosphere. Discover why Hermanus deserves more than just a passing visit.
Hermanus is one of those destinations that has a way of making you want to stay a little longer.
Situated between the Kleinrivier Mountains and the beautiful waters of Walker Bay, this charming coastal village is internationally recognised for its shore-based whale watching. Every year, Southern Right Whales visit the bay to calve and nurture their young, offering visitors the remarkable opportunity to observe these magnificent creatures from the coastline.
But there is much more to Hermanus than whales.
The village has evolved into one of the Western Cape’s most appealing destinations, combining natural beauty with an excellent restaurant scene, independent art galleries, beautiful beaches, scenic walking trails and a renowned wine valley.
Whether you enjoy good food and wine, outdoor adventures, art or simply relaxing beside the ocean, Hermanus offers something for everyone.
Here are some of the reasons why we think you should stay a little longer.
The famous whales and the Hermanus Cliff Path
Let’s start with what Hermanus is best known for.
Between June and November, Southern Right Whales visit Walker Bay, with September and October traditionally offering particularly good viewing opportunities.
What makes Hermanus special is that you don’t need to join a boat trip to see them. The famous Cliff Path provides some of the best land-based whale-watching opportunities in the world.
Stretching for approximately 12 kilometres along the coastline, the path passes rocky coves, tidal pools and spectacular viewpoints overlooking the ocean.
During whale season, you may be fortunate enough to see whales breaching, tail-slapping or swimming close to the shoreline.
Start your walk near the historic Old Harbour and continue towards Gearing’s Point, one of the village’s most popular viewpoints.
Even outside whale season, the Cliff Path is well worth exploring. The ocean views, seabirds and beautiful coastal scenery make it one of Hermanus’s greatest attractions.
Keep an eye out for the famous Whale Crier, who uses a kelp horn to announce whale sightings along the coastline.

A restaurant scene that punches well above its weight
For such a relatively small village, Hermanus has an impressive selection of restaurants and coffee shops.
From relaxed seaside dining to sophisticated restaurants and excellent seafood, there is no shortage of places to enjoy a memorable meal.
Some restaurants are particularly special because of their extraordinary locations.
Fick’s Pool
Situated beside a historic tidal pool, Fick’s Pool is a wonderful spot for a relaxed lunch or afternoon drink.
With the ocean practically at your feet, it offers a beautiful setting for sharing plates, cocktails and good conversation.
It is particularly lovely on a warm afternoon.
Visit Fick’s Pool
Bientang’s Cave
Perhaps one of Hermanus’s most unusual dining experiences, Bientang’s Cave is built into the natural rock formations beneath Marine Drive.
With the ocean just metres away, the setting is quite extraordinary.
Enjoy fresh seafood, a glass of South African wine and spectacular views across Walker Bay. During whale season, you may even spot whales from your table.
It is a wonderful choice for a special occasion or romantic lunch.
Visit Bientang’s Cave
Burgundy Restaurant
Close to the Old Harbour, Burgundy is a popular village favourite.
Its relaxed atmosphere and waterfront position make it a good choice for breakfast, lunch or dinner while exploring the centre of Hermanus.
Visit Burgundy
La Pentola
For something a little more refined, La Pentola offers an appealing dining experience with beautiful views across Walker Bay.
It is particularly suited to an unhurried lunch or dinner.
Discover La Pentola
Beyond these establishments, you will find plenty of independent eateries, artisan coffee shops and welcoming little restaurants throughout the village.
Part of the pleasure of staying in Hermanus is discovering your own favourites.
Hermanus First Friday of the month artwalk
Art galleries and a creative village atmosphere
Hermanus has a surprisingly vibrant arts scene.
The village is home to a collection of galleries showcasing contemporary South African art, paintings, sculpture, ceramics and locally produced crafts.
Harbour Road and the surrounding streets are a good place to start exploring.
Some galleries worth visiting include:
* Rossouw Modern Art Gallery.
* SPACE Modern.
* Lembu Gallery & Studio.
* Walker Bay Modern Art Gallery.
If your visit coincides with a First Friday Art Walk, make time to attend. Participating galleries open their doors for an evening of art, conversation and exploration.
It is another lovely way to experience the creative side of Hermanus.
Beautiful beaches and swimming spots
Hermanus offers a wonderful selection of beaches and swimming spots, each with its own character.
Grotto Beach is one of the area’s best-known beaches, with its wide stretch of soft white sand and beautiful mountain backdrop. It is ideal for swimming, walking or simply enjoying a sunny afternoon.
Voëlklip Beach offers smaller, more sheltered swimming areas surrounded by rocky coastline and beautiful ocean views.
Fick’s Pool is another favourite, providing a natural tidal swimming pool alongside the restaurant.
Whether you prefer a long beach walk, a refreshing swim or simply relaxing with a book, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the coastline.

Fernkloof Nature Reserve – a nature lover’s paradise
While the ocean attracts much of the attention, the mountains surrounding Hermanus are equally impressive.
Fernkloof Nature Reserve protects an extraordinary variety of indigenous fynbos and offers numerous walking trails for different fitness levels.
Depending on the season, you may encounter flowering proteas, ericas and other plants belonging to the Cape Floral Kingdom.
The reserve also offers spectacular elevated views across Hermanus, Walker Bay and the surrounding mountains.
For those who enjoy hiking, photography and nature, it is well worth setting aside a morning to explore.

The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley – wine and spectacular scenery
Just outside Hermanus lies the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, one of the Western Cape’s most celebrated cool-climate wine regions.
Its rolling vineyards, mountain scenery and proximity to the ocean create the perfect setting for a leisurely afternoon of wine tasting.
The valley is particularly well known for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Some of the wine estates worth visiting include:
* Hamilton Russell Vineyards.
* Bouchard Finlayson.
* Creation Wines.
* Ataraxia Wines.
* Hermanuspietersfontein.
* Bosman Hermanus.
Many offer wine tastings, food pairings or excellent dining experiences.
Our suggestion is to choose a couple of estates, enjoy a tasting and allow yourself plenty of time to appreciate the scenery.
It is an ideal outing for couples and another reason to spend more than just one night in Hermanus.
Golf, markets and exploring the village
There is plenty to enjoy beyond the coastline and wine estates.
Golf enthusiasts can enjoy a round at Hermanus Golf Club, with its beautiful mountain and coastal setting.
If you are visiting on a Saturday, the Hermanus Country Market is well worth a visit. It brings together local food producers, artisans and craftspeople, offering everything from freshly prepared food to interesting gifts.
For something a little more active, take a walk up Hoy’s Koppie. This prominent rocky hill near the village centre offers lovely views across Hermanus and provides an interesting glimpse into the town’s history.
The village itself is best explored on foot. Wander between the boutiques, galleries and coffee shops, stop for lunch or simply enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.
Explore beyond Hermanus
Hermanus is also an excellent base from which to explore the wider Cape Whale Coast.
Within a relatively short drive, you can discover several wonderful destinations.
Stanford is a charming country village with heritage buildings, restaurants and wine experiences.
Gansbaai and De Kelders offer spectacular coastal scenery and additional opportunities for land-based whale watching.
Betty’s Bay is home to the Stony Point Nature Reserve, where you can observe a colony of endangered African penguins.
For those travelling between Cape Town and Hermanus, the spectacular Clarence Drive coastal route is highly recommended. The road follows the coastline beneath dramatic mountain slopes, with numerous viewpoints along the way.
It is one of South Africa’s most beautiful coastal drives.

How long should you stay in Hermanus?
Although Hermanus is within comfortable driving distance of Cape Town, we would recommend spending at least two nights here, preferably three or four.
A longer stay allows you to enjoy the village at a relaxed pace rather than trying to fit everything into a single day.
You could spend your first day exploring the Old Harbour, walking the Cliff Path and enjoying one of the coastal restaurants.
On the second day, discover Fernkloof Nature Reserve or spend the morning at the beach before heading into the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley for wine tasting.
A third day could be devoted to exploring Stanford, Gansbaai or Betty’s Bay.
There is plenty to see and do, but just as importantly, there is time to relax and enjoy the destination.
When is the best time to visit Hermanus?
Hermanus is a year-round destination, with each season offering something different.
Winter (June–August): The beginning of whale season, dramatic coastal scenery and beautiful green mountain landscapes.
Spring (September–November): Traditionally the best period for whale watching, with spring flowers and warmer weather. The annual Hermanus Whale Festival adds to the atmosphere.
Summer (December–February): Perfect for beach days, swimming, wine tasting and outdoor dining.
Autumn (March–May): A quieter time to visit, with pleasant weather and excellent opportunities to explore the village and surrounding wine estates.
Whichever season you choose, Hermanus has plenty to offer.
Hermanus – a destination worth slowing down for
There is something special about Hermanus.
Perhaps it is the combination of mountains and ocean, the excellent restaurants, the relaxed village atmosphere or simply the pleasure of being able to explore so much on foot.
The whales may be what first attracts visitors, but they are certainly not the only reason to return.
For couples seeking a romantic escape, international travellers exploring the Western Cape, food and wine enthusiasts or nature lovers, Hermanus offers an exceptional combination of experiences.
Our advice is simple: don’t stop in Hermanus just to see the whales.
Stay a little longer. Explore the galleries, discover the restaurants, walk the coastline, visit the wine estates and find your favourite coffee shop.
Give yourself time to experience the village rather than simply pass through it.
Because some destinations are best enjoyed when you have nowhere else you need to be.
Hermanus is one of those places.
