The name “Kalliste” comes from the ancient Greek word “Kallistos” or “Callistos,” which means “the fairest” or “the most beautiful.” At its root is “kallos,” the Greek for “beauty.” This name has carried aesthetic and cultural significance since classical times.
Therese first encountered the name Kalliste while studying Latin at school and knew then that it was meant for a home. That dream became a reality in 2016 when we purchased a seaside property in Betty’s Bay—an idyllic place with magnificent views of the ocean and mountains. It was there that Kalliste finally found its home.
The creation of Kalliste Misty Shores Cottage marked the beginning of our adventure into hospitality—a journey that has brought us much joy. Each space is thoughtfully designed to be full of character, always with the aim of making you feel genuinely welcome and at home. Rather than following the conventions of typical hotel rooms or rentals, we create spaces that we truly enjoy living in, and we hope you do too.
In the décor of Whale Walk Apartment, we have tried to reflect the vibrant spirit of Hermanus—its cafés, art galleries, whales, and seaside lifestyle. The apartments name is based on the southern right whales for which Hermanus is renowned and the apartments central location allowing one to easily walk everywhere.
The artwork in the apartment is especially meaningful to us, with many pieces coming from our home, Kalliste Beach House. The art in the lounge, above the soafa, is our own interpretation of the Old Hermanus Harbour, while the sunset scenes capture the beauty of Clarence Drive. In the dining room, you’ll find artwork featuring Sally, our beloved Jack Russell, who will always hold a piece of my heart, with our son Dean and Therese.
